Itinerary

13 Nov 2028
Lima (Callao)

Peru's underrated capital enjoys a fine setting on the Pacific coast, and the handsome colonial-era buildings surrounding the Plaza de Armas give clues to Lima's distinguished history. For three centuries this was the capital of the Spanish Americas, when the city grew rich on the back of plundered Inca gold. Modern Lima can be a little hectic, the roads often clogged with traffic, but the historic centre has an undeniable charm to it, and in recent years a clutch of innovative restaurants have helped to put Peruvian cuisine on the map.

Memory Tip: Don't miss The pre-Columbian citadel of Pachacamac is a must see, just a few miles from the city and a key Inca site.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, the famous lost city of the Incas, is truly one of the world’s most awesome sights. Nestled between two forest-clad peaks high up in the Andes, the citadel is best appreciated early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the midday crowds have subsided.

Buenos Aires

The streets of Buenos Aires are redolent of a grand old European capital, lined with elegant architecture that wouldn’t look out of place in Madrid or Paris. There is also plenty of Latin passion on display: Argentina is the home of tango, that most electrifying of dances, and has played host to countless revolutions over the years.

Ushuaia

Perched on the ragged southern edge of Argentina, where the snow-capped Andes fall away into the churning sea, Ushuaia has a frontier town feel to it, and serves as the base for expeditions into the icy waters of Antarctica.

Antarctic Peninsula

Antarctica is the world’s last great wilderness, an alien landscape of snow-covered mountains, jagged icebergs and extraordinary wildlife. December is the most popular month to visit, with temperatures at their warmest (by Antarctic standards), long hours of daylight (great for photographers), and wildlife active everywhere.

Memory Tip: Our tip Plan to stay longer than you think you’ll need; the city offers plenty and the breathtaking Iguazu Falls can be reached by a short flight.
