Voyage overview

What this voyage is

Le Ponant is a beautiful three-masted sailing yacht carrying just 32 guests, small enough to visit some of the world’s most secluded harbours.

Ponant’s most intimate ship came into service over 20 years ago,
but is still much loved today. The yacht is ultra sleek in its
design, and the modern staterooms all have porthole windows. The
mostly francophone guests love the al fresco nature of the public
spaces, with a large sundeck, outdoor restaurant and swimming
marina, and you’ll always feel connected to the sea.

Dubrovnik

We never fail to be moved when we see the terracotta roofs and honey-golden walls of Dubrovnik, and a stroll around the perfectly preserved old town is a highlight of any visit to the Dalmatian coast. Formerly known as Ragusa, Dubrovnik is a city with a rich, and occasionally troubled, history; the shelling of the city was one of the most shocking images of the Balkan wars of the 1990s, which makes the painstaking restoration of the old town in the years since all the more remarkable. Make sure you take the time to walk around the walls and soak up the views across the rooftops towards Lokrum island, and the deep sapphire of the Adriatic Sea beyond.

Memory Tip: Our tip Walking the entire length of the walls involves a lot of steps, and it can be quite exhausting in the hot Croatian sun. If you’d rather just see a smaller section, the Min?eta tower provides the best photo opportunities.

Monopoli

The laid back fishing town of Monopoli is one of the less touristy spots on the Puglian coast, with a picturesque old town and a pleasant seafront promenade, the Lungomare. There are several lovely beaches nearby, or you can take a day trip to Alberobello, with its famous domed ‘trulli’ houses.

Otranto

Otranto sits at the end of the ‘heel’ of Italy, and has borne the brunt of many invasions and attacks over the years, most notably by the Turks in 1480. If you only have a day here we'd recommend visiting nearby Lecce, a true baroque masterpiece that has been described as the ‘Florence of the South’.

Gallipoli

The charming Puglian town of Gallipoli lies close to the bottom of Italy’s ‘heel’, with the modern town on the mainland connected by bridge to the walled old town, which sits just offshore on its own island. The cobbled streets are a delight to explore, full of beautiful baroque palazzi and enticing seafood restaurants.

Taormina

Taormina enjoys a truly spectacular setting on Sicily’s east coast, perched on a mountainside looking out towards the smouldering Mount Etna. The medieval streets are pleasant but often crowded in high season, so we’d recommend getting out and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Reggio Calabria

Reggio Calabria is the main transport hub for travel to Sicily, and the seafront Lungomare promenade has great views across to Mount Etna. The city’s main attraction is the Museo Nazionale with its stunning Ancient Greek bronze statues, while the picturesque nearby town of Scilla is well worth a day trip.

Palermo

Palermo is an acquired taste; noisy, chaotic and rather grimey in places. But there’s something quite intoxicating about the crumbling facades and the bustling markets, and the Arabesque style of many of the buildings hints at Sicily’s historical role as a stepping stone between Europe and North Africa.
