The port of Fuerte Amador sits at the southern edge of Panama City, near the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. The shining skyscrapers of the Panamanian capital are a testament to the city's status as a key financial centre, while the tiny Casco Viejo is home to pretty colonial streets, hip hotels and happening bars. If you find the city's chaotic traffic offputting, you may prefer an excursion to the canal's Gatún Lake in search of wildlife including capuchin monkeys and sloths.

Situated just off the coast of Panama, the idyllic San Blas islands are home to the Kuna Indians, who enjoy political autonomy from the mainland and have an unusual degree of control over tourism to their homeland. Visiting these simple island communities is a privilege, and an insight into an indigenous way of life unsullied by mass tourism.

Cartagena was founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1533, and the beautifully preserved centre is a real highlight of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The walled old town, the Ciudad Amurallada, is a camera-friendly collection of cobbled streets and colourful, colonial-era buildings.

Puerto Limón is a busy port on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, and plays a vital role in the export of bananas. Take a trip out of the city and explore the lush rainforest, with nearby attractions including the canals of Tortuguero National Park, a key breeding site for green turtles.

The Caribbean island of Providencia may belong to Colombia, but its relative inaccessibility and distance from the mainland lends the island its own distinct flavour. Many locals speak an English creole, and tourists are thin on the ground. It’s a great place for diving, snorkelling or relaxing on the beach.

Far more than just an offshore tax haven, Grand Cayman boasts the staggeringly beautiful white sands of Seven Mile Beach and some fantastic snorkelling in crystal clear waters. The capital, George Town, is a compact and friendly place, home to some interesting architecture and a suspiciously large number of registered companies.

Ocho Rios sits on a lovely stretch of coastline, blessed with classically Caribbean beaches and a lush forested interior. There isn’t a huge amount to do other than relax by the beach, but nearby attractions include Dunn’s River Falls, James Bond Beach and the Mystic Mountain rainforest adventure park.

Situated on Jamaica’s north east coast, Port Antonio has a quieter, more authentic feel than the big resorts on the west of the island, and was once a haunt of Hollywood stars such as Errol Flynn. This part of Jamaica is rich in natural beauty, with pristine rainforest, secluded beaches, cascading waterfalls and misty mountains.

La Romana is situated on the south east coast of the Dominican Republic, with several nearby attractions worth your time. Next to the sprawling Casa de Campo resort you’ll find the pretty tourist village of Altos de Chavón, while the beaches of Isla Saona and Isla Catalina are a short boat ride away.

Grand Turk is the capital of the Turks and Caicos, a collection of sleepy and spectacularly beautiful coral islands to the east of the Bahamas. The pristine white sands and turquoise waters are the main attraction, and the extensive barrier reef makes this a popular destination for divers in the know.

Downtown Miami is a destination in its own right, with a host of world class galleries, but it's still Miami Beach that draws the biggest crowds. The Art Deco district around South Beach is very much back in vogue, with new restaurants, bars and luxury developments sprouting up all over the place.
