Tampa

The Tampa Bay area of Florida is home to some of the finest beaches in the USA, as well as a host of cultural attractions. The city of Tampa itself may not be the main draw, but it still has some interesting sights, including historic Ybor City, Tampa's atmospheric Latin Quarter. The neighbouring city of St. Petersburg is home to the excellent waterfront Salvador Dalí Museum, and Sarasota's Ringling Museum of Art also hosts some interesting exhibitions. Other attractions in the area include Busch Gardens, a world class zoo and adventure park that provides great family entertainment.

Memory Tip: Our tip This is a great destination for families, but otherwise the Mundy advice is to give it a miss – Sarasota is perhaps a better option.

Grand Cayman

Far more than just an offshore tax haven, Grand Cayman boasts the staggeringly beautiful white sands of Seven Mile Beach and some fantastic snorkelling in crystal clear waters. The capital, George Town, is a compact and friendly place, home to some interesting architecture and a suspiciously large number of registered companies.

Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios sits on a lovely stretch of coastline, blessed with classically Caribbean beaches and a lush forested interior. There isn’t a huge amount to do other than relax by the beach, but nearby attractions include Dunn’s River Falls, James Bond Beach and the Mystic Mountain rainforest adventure park.

Oranjestad

The tiny Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba, located just off the coast of Venezuela, lies outside of the hurricane belt, meaning it enjoys a largely dry climate, and boasts some of the best beaches in the region, if not the world.

Willemstad

The gabled houses of Willemstad lend an undeniably Dutch feel to the capital of little Curaçao, with a splash of Caribbean colour thrown in. The island itself is not your typical lush tropical paradise - the landscape is characterised instead by thorny shrubs and cacti - but there are some fantastic beaches and quaint little villages.

Kralendijk

The quiet, cactus-covered Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire is internationally renowned for its diving, ringed by spectacular coral reefs that teem with life. The capital, Kralendijk, is home to some pretty colonial architecture, and the island is also known for its flamingos and pink sand beaches.

Basseterre (Saint Kitts)

Laid back and low key, Saint Kitts is an island typified by rolling green hills, characterful beach bars and the lingering remnants of the sugar cane trade that once dominated here. Attractions include the UNESCO-listed Brimstone Hill fortress, the 18-mile Scenic Railway and the faded Georgian elegance of the capital, Basseterre.

Philipsburg

Philipsburg is the gateway to an intriguing little Caribbean island with a dual personality: the Dutch side, St. Maarten, is the livelier of the two, with shopping malls, casinos and more of a nightlife scene, while French-speaking St. Martin is a more refined (and more expensive) affair, with a laid-back, continental air and a host of exclusive resorts and restaurants.

Tortola

Tortola is the largest and most populous of the British Virgin Islands, and the bustling port at Road Town is a magnet for sailors from around the world. The island is blessed with some gorgeous beaches and secluded coves, and it’s a great place for a spot of snorkelling.

Miami

Downtown Miami is a destination in its own right, with a host of world class galleries, but it's still Miami Beach that draws the biggest crowds. The Art Deco district around South Beach is very much back in vogue, with new restaurants, bars and luxury developments sprouting up all over the place.

Memory Tip: Don't miss People watching in South Beach – glamorous gay guys on skates with miniature dogs in slings…
